May Volunteer Day: Accomplishing the “Impossible” in the Cold Wind — United as One, the Lotus Finally Blossoms
In May, Amitabha Village still carried a cool chill in the air. Although the sun shone brightly, the spring breeze still carried traces of lingering coldness.
This Volunteer Day, held during the first week of the month, was perhaps one of the most challenging in recent times. The most important tasks were to officially install the Amitabha Lotus Tower prototype and successfully hang the plaque for the Buddha Recitation Hall.
Standing before the enormous lotus petal weighing nearly two tons, everyone seemed tiny and fragile by comparison. From early morning, the volunteers worked tirelessly — transporting materials, dismantling scaffolding, cleaning, and installing — continuing through the afternoon and late into the night with hardly any rest.
Because the conditions on site were limited, everyone had to rely solely on the tools and equipment available at Amitabha Village. Together, they brainstormed constantly and tested one solution after another. Problems kept arising throughout the process, but no one backed down. Instead, they repeatedly adjusted their methods and tried again and again.
Some volunteers focused on studying the structural load and balance, while others repeatedly adjusted the securing methods. Some carried materials back and forth, while others quietly assisted with support and stabilization. In the cold wind, everyone coordinated and cooperated tirelessly, all for the sake of allowing the massive lotus petal to close safely and securely into place.
In the end, without hiring a large crane, everyone worked together and successfully secured the giant petal firmly onto its foundation.
When the petal finally settled slowly into position, many people at the scene could not help but breathe a sigh of relief. In that moment, beyond exhaustion, there was an indescribable sense of comfort and deep emotion.
Afterward, everyone gathered their strength once more and successfully raised the massive wooden plaque, weighing several hundred pounds, onto the entrance of the Buddha Recitation Hall. As the plaque slowly rose into place, it seemed to mark a perfect conclusion to the day’s hard work.

During the most difficult stages of construction at Amitabha Village, it is precisely because of the silent dedication and steadfast support of countless volunteers that the monastery has been able to move forward step by step.

Deep gratitude to all the volunteers who participated in this service day. Every contribution may seem small, but when the strength of many hearts comes together, even things once thought “impossible” can ultimately be accomplished.
